Drug Abuse

Powder form of cocaine is easily obtainable all over South Dakota. Availability of crack cocaine is increasing in the state, predominantly in eastern areas. Heroin is easily obtainable for individual use. The demand and use of methamphetamine show a steady rise since last year. Methamphetamine produced in Mexico is the most easily available one in the state. Marijuana is easily obtainable anywhere in South Dakota.

In the western parts of South Dakota availability of MDMA is very easy. Its presence is steadily growing in the eastern parts also. LSD availability is limited in the state. According to the reports from the Department of Health, South Dakota, hydrocodone, codeine, and Darvocet-N are the widely abused diverted pharmaceutical substances in the state. Forged prescriptions and phony call-ins are the main sources of these drugs. Availability and abuse of OxyContin is considered a growing problem to the state.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), 1.66% of South Dakota citizens reported in the past year their dependence on illicit drugs. Around 40% of South Dakota 12th grade males reported using marijuana at least once in their lifetimes.

Alcohol Abuse

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), more than 55% of the South Dakota population (aged 12 or older) reported the past month use of alcohol. More than 22% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and more than 71% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol in the past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is around 57%.

In the survey, more than 28% of the South Dakota people showed binge alcohol use and around 36% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is around 16%. In the state, 10.79% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.
